The famous government medical college Sardar Patel Medical College was established in 1959. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the nation of India's first Prime Minister, inaugurated it in 1959. The college was formerly known as Bikaner Medical College, and the residents of Bikaner later donated a sizeable sum. The architect of Modern India, Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel, is now known by this new name.
